Are Pit Bulls Dangerous? My Story

Are Pit Bulls dangerous? I was scared to death of the breed because I’d heard the stories. Never mind that I’d owned a German Shepherd and two Great Danes. Here's the story leading up to my first Pit Bull encounter. LIFE CHANGES
With my Golden Retriever Isaac gone, it was time for a change in my life. As long as I was mourning, I’d add the failure of an 18-year marriage to the soup. I filed for divorce and moved to a tiny house with my three kids, Izzy dog (my Golden Retriever jogging partner), my two cats, and the boys’ ferrets. What the old house lacked, the yard made up for. A California girl living on 37 wooded acres in Georgia was heaven. We took in a rescue dog. We got 20 chickens, ducks, two more cats, 3 hamsters and a snake. I worked three part time jobs and wrote a book at night. We had regular visits from raccoons, possums, rabbits and even a coyote. Life settled down when I was sleeping and once my daughter started kindergarten, I got one full time job. After four years, I met this guy... The first thing I noticed was my pets loved him instantly. I trust my dogs judgment of people. My kids all adored him too. Problem? He had a Pit Bull.
ARE PIT BULLS DANGEROUS? - MY FIRST PIT BULL MEETING
I was scared to death of the breed because I’d heard the stories. Everyone knew they were vicious and couldn’t be trusted. I was afraid I'd be a part of a story about dog attacking single mother, in the newspaper. I timidly followed Joey into his house. He instructed me to sit on the couch. Then he let out Bonz Capone. Our initial meeting was okay since he didn’t go for my jugular. He acted like – a dog. But he couldn’t fool me. I just didn't understand Pit Bull behavior yet. Joey left us alone for a few minutes. I tried with all my might to push my fear down so Bonz wouldn't sense it. That Pit Bull jumped up on the couch and sat right beside me. After looking rather prim and proper for a minute, he sort of slouched and leaned his back against the back of the couch. He gave me a very suspicious look out of the corner of his eye. Our faces were maybe 18 inches apart and then it happened. Are Pit Bulls dangerous? Oh my god, he moved slightly toward me. My adrenalin rushed and I grabbed a saucepan off the coffee table to bash him in the head before he ate my face. Bonz Capone did a quick twist and leap maneuver over the back of the couch and ran up the stairs like the devil was chasing him. Joey came down the stairs and asked me what happened. I swore I hadn’t hit his beloved dog even though I was prepared to bash him over the head in self defense. He laughed at me wholeheartedly and told me he would never have left us alone if he thought there was even a remote chance Bonz would bite me. He said goodbye to Bonz and took me home.

After that, he let Bonz ride in the car with us a few times so I could get used to him – or maybe it was so Bonz could get used to me. Either way, once I saw Bonz as the polite and beautiful dog (and the fawn brindled Pit Bull) that he really was and looked into those soulful brown eyes, I calmed down and we bonded over a piece of beef jerky. Never have a met more of a gentleman. ...Ten years later, look who's still putting up with me
