The Best Commercial Dog Food

The best commercial dog food can be hard to find. Whether you're looking for dry, canned, or dehydrated, the best quality can be found by knowing your ingredients, so here's a list.
High quality dog foods are usually made by smaller companies. Why? Having smaller operations makes it possible to obtain fresh local ingredients and monitor each stage of the dog food making process.

Keep in mind, the best commercial dog food does not necessarily mean the most healthy dog foods because most are cooked at high temperatures which kills some of the original nutrients.

Still, if you have no time or the inclination to make your own dog food, here are the healthy dog food ingredients to look for on the label.

    Meats and Proteins

Specifically named meats are best, followed by specifically named meat meals such as:

    • turkey (turkey meal)
    • lamb (lamb meal)
    • duck (duck meal)
    • salmon (salmon meal)
    • beef (beef meal)
    • chicken (chicken meal)
    • eggs

    Grains, Legumes and Potatoes

Whole ground grains and legumes are not just carbohydrates. They contain protein and other nutrients as well.

    • brown rice
    • oats
    • barley
    • millet
    • potatoes
    • sweet potatoes
    • peas

    Healthy Fats

Specifically named fats and oils are good. The best oils have omega 3 fatty acids.

    • salmon oil (omega 3)
    • flax oil (omega 3)
    • sunflower oil (omega 3)
    • safflower oil (omega 3)
    • herring oil (omega 3)
    • chicken fat
    • canola oil

    Vitamins

Vitamins should be in forms that can be utilized by the body. Here are examples.

    • Vitamin C - Ester C, Calcium Ascorbate
    • Vitamin E - d (not dl) alpha tocopherol
    • Vitamin K - as egg yolk, liver, oats, kelp, alfalfa

    Preservatives

The higher the ingredient quality, the less effort must be made to delay further degradation of the product, making natural antioxidants like rosemary extract and vitamin E very effective.

    A Good Choice

A good choice for the best commercial dog food is Wysong. Developed by a veterinarian who realized the harmful effects commercial dog foods were having on our pets, he started this family owned company 30 years ago.

Here is a list of ingredients for Dr. Wysong's newest dry dog food named Epigen. Get a load of this. It's grain free, starch free, has a whopping 60% meat protein and starts with ORGANIC chicken:
