Bloody Diarrhea in Dogs
Bloody diarrhea in dogs can be very scary. Understanding the cause of diarrhea and some basic canine treatment options at home can help immensely. Cause of Diarrhea in Dogs
Remember that canine diarrhea is not a disease. It is a symptom that something has interrupted the normal work of the large intestines. Whether it is the ingestion of bad food, a non-food item, bacteria or parasites, the intestines are getting rid of it as fast as possible to avoid absorption into the body through the intestinal walls.
Bloody Diarrhea in Dogs
Obviously this can be more serious and if one of my dogs had really bloody liquid stools, I would cry and try not to panic. Fortunately my experiences with bloody dog diarrhea have not been severe and have cleared up quickly. I do NOT panic when: - There is not a high fever. See how to take a canine temperature.
- My dog is still acting pretty normal
- My dog has time to ask to go outside. (I feel the more control my dogs have, the less threatening.)
Canine Diarrhea Treatment
Here's where I'd get into a fist fight with someone if I were a violent person. STOP FEEDING THE DOG! Why dog owners insist on feeding a sick dog is beyond me. If food is going right through your dog at a rapid pace, he or she is not absorbing any nutrients whatsoever. Digestion takes a lot of work. Eating at this point is like running a mile or two. It's going to make you feel worse, not better. Bloody diarrhea in dogs usually means there is inflammation in the large intestines, so here is what I do: - No food!
- Plenty of quality water to prevent dehydration
- Healing broth or juices for vitamins and minerals. See Fasting for Health for the recipes.
- A combination homeopathic remedy for canine diarrhea. If you only have homeopathic phosphorus, that may work by itself.
- OR, if you have the NSP basics in your medicine cabinet, give 1 probiotic a day. Either Probiotics Eleven or Sunshine Heroes Probiotic Power (for small dogs and puppies) and 1 teaspoon of Silver Shield liquid (about 3 cc's in a syringe) by mouth.
The probiotics will increase the good bacteria and the Silver shield works like goldenseal (or similar to an antibiotic) without any side effects! If it takes more than one day, decrease Silver Shield to 1/2 teaspoon and keep on with one probiotic a day until diarrhea is gone.
Of course, these are my guidelines. Its what I do. YOU must be the judge of when your dog needs to see the vet. If your dog runs a high fever, passes a lot of bloody liquid without control, and there is no sign of improvement from the above mentioned suggestions within 24 hours, please call your veterinarian. If you are convinced your dog will starve or you can't emotionally keep food from him, go to my page on Canine Diarrhea Treatment and make the recipe for chronic diarrhea. (It works for humans too!) If you don't have Probiotic ElevenĀ® or Silver Shield Liquid, see my Ordering Dog Health Supplements page. Very handy to have around.
