Canine Vitamin Supplements

So you are looking for canine vitamin supplements? What does vitamin A do? Vitamins C and E for dogs? Which boost the immune system? The best dog health supplements may surprise you.

While canine vitamin supplements sound like a great idea, let's examine the idea a little first. Then I'll give you suggestions.

Could we have been sold a bill of goods from watching vitamin commercials? I ask because I realize that I was. I grew up watching One-a-Day commercials. And how many ads do we see for something not necessarily nutritious but they make it sound great because they 'added' a vitamin to it?

But now we know that taking an isolated vitamin or group of vitamins may not do much good. Why?

Have you heard the term phyto-nutrients or phyto-chemicals? I've heard them referred to by a doctor as unnamed vitamins and vitamin enhancers. So, if they are vitamin catalysts, where do we find them? In whole foods.

Here's an example using the Carotenoid family:

  • alpha-carotene - carrots
  • beta-carotene - leafy green and yellow vegetables (eg. broccoli, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots)
  • beta-cryptoxanthin - citrus, peaches, apricots
  • lutein - leafy greens such as kale, spinach, turnip greens
  • lycopene - tomato products, pink grapefruit, watermelon, guava
  • zeaxanthin - green vegetables, eggs, citrus

And vitamins aren't the only thing dogs need. What about minerals? Dogs need ten times more calcium than we do, and they need phosphorus to use it. For more on that, see Calcium For Dogs.

All this being said, I believe the best, most nutritious way to add dog vitamins for overall dog health is adding superfoods.

What is a super food? Nutrient dense foods full of vitamins and minerals. A good superfood combination can be found in either capsules or powder form.

When dried correctly they maintain nutrient levels and make excellent dog health supplements, including vitamins for immune system support.

I also believe that by using human grade supplements, we get better quality because standards are higher. A favorite of mine is Green Zone Ultimate Powder. To learn more about it, and see how to qualify for a discount, see CANINE SUPPLEMENTS.

You can also sprout your own alfalfa and add kelp powder to their food.

I have done both myself, but I think buying a combination already premixed is easier and more beneficial.

Even with that said, I'll probably always sprout alfalfa seeds in addition to any canine supplements. Why? Because two of my dogs sit, stare and beg for it while the jar full of seeds lies sprouting on the window sill. How cute is that?
