GMO Corn in Dog Food

Corn in dog food is bad. Many dogs don't digest it and suffer skin disorders from it, including mine. Now that we have GMO corn and soy, here's how it could affect their health.

Corn in Dog Food

I have read that corn is not bad for dogs but disagree wholeheartedly. If my dogs get fresh corn, it comes out the other end as a dog poop decoration. If they get dog food which includes any corn product, their skin gets dry, flaky and itchy.

You may have come to the same conclusion, but if not, there is more you need to know about corn.

GMO Corn

A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to obtain a desired trait or characteristic. This process may be called either Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM).

Okay, now that the science lesson is over, why should this concern us? Because what they mixed into the corn is a natural pesticide.

Organic farmers use natural Bt bacteria spray for insect control, but the Bt-toxin produced in GM plants, is thousands of times more concentrated than natural Bt spray. It is part of the plant so can't be washed off, has allergenic properties, and has antibiotic resistant genes.

Perhaps the US epidemic of food allergies and asthma is a casualty of genetic manipulation. Other major problem foods are: Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed, and Sugar Beets.

A Warning for All of Us

Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GMO foods, including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.

The only published human feeding study revealed that even after you stop eating GMOs, harmful GM proteins may be produced continuously inside of you; genes inserted into GM soy transfer into bacteria inside your intestines and continue to function.

What Other Fun Combinations Have Been Made?

Scientists have done some interesting combinations. A little off topic, but I thought you mind find these interesting:

  • Spider genes were inserted into goat DNA, in hopes that the goat milk would contain spider web protein for use in bulletproof vests.
  • Cow genes turned pigskins into cowhides.
  • Jellyfish genes lit up pigs' noses in the dark.
  • Artic fish genes gave tomatoes and strawberries tolerance to frost.
  • Potatoes that glowed in the dark when they needed watering.
  • Human genes were inserted into corn to produce spermicide.

I personally feel GMOs are like giving a five-year-old a bunch of fireworks and matches. They have the general idea of what their doing but are in no way prepared if one starts a fire down the road.

Now as for corn in dog food, that's only one concern. What about you? There are thousands of products with corn syrup. Not only candy and soft drinks, but juice and many others. Please, for both your health and your dogs, be a label reader, and start buying products with the non-GMO label.
