Are Pit Bulls Dangerous Dogs?
I’m going to repeat this several times. Are Pit Bulls dangerous dogs? This is a really important issue, so please hear me out.
Have you ever been bitten by a Pit Bull? Me either.
I have however, been bitten by two Chihuahuas, a Husky and a Cocker Spaniel. The most damage was done by a Chihuahua who I knew, and got me in the face. Did I report the dogs? No. They were all dogs of people I knew, and I didn’t want them to be mad at me. Besides, who in their right mind would turn in a Chihuahua for being vicious? How embarrassing is that?
THE BLAME GAME - ARE PIT BULLS DANGEROUS DOGS?
Fear grows like Kudzu. Somehow people have begun thinking that every time there is a dog attack, its done by a Pit and these dogs get blamed by people who don’t even know what they look like. Dog fear is stupid. Someone very close to me dotes on her Pit/Dalmatian mix, yet she becomes frozen in fear when she sees a Rottweiler! Are Rotties dangerous dogs? Has she ever been bitten by one? No. Fear is a learned behavior and we need to stop passing it around like hors d'oeuvres at a party.
Ninety-nine percent of the time, any dog that bites does not have proper leadership by its owner. Are Pit Bulls dangerous dogs? There is no vicious breed. The best way to be safe from a dog bite is to understand your own behavior toward a dog and to learn dog behavior and dog body language. I have not been bitten by a dog in 20 years.
WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT PIT BULLS
They are a strong and one of the highly intelligent dog breeds. And they are some of the best clowns I have ever seen in my life.
I have met many nice Pit Bulls who are fun loving and gentle to everyone. They chase balls, catch Frisbees high in the air; their maneuverability amazing. They leap off docks into the water and climb trees. They save peoples lives and let kittens and baby chickens crawl all over them.
Are Pit Bulls dangerous dogs because they have a high pain tolerance. It doesn’t mean they don’t feel it, it means they can deal with it. I should be so lucky. When one of my dogs was injured, he held still as I blotted and wiped the blood away - except when he reached up to lick my face. Amazing. At the vet’s office, she wanted to sedate him to clean and stitch him up. She didn’t have to. The gentleman that he is, he just let her fix him without complaint. To me, these dogs are unsung heroes and bring new meaning to the word loyalty.
WHAT'S NOT GOOD ABOUT PIT BULLS
A dog’s temperament is individual, and if a dominant dog; whether its aggressive or fearful dominance is owned by a person who doesn’t know how to be a good pack leader for his dog, teaching him the proper boundaries, the result can be a dangerous dog because of his size and strength.

We see dominance and aggression in little dogs all the time. But whether the dog weighs five pounds or 105 pounds, if a dog jumps all over you or nips you, it is definitely being dominant. People who own these manner-less little dogs should probably not own a Pit. If you haven’t read it yet, please read How to Greet Your Dog, by Angie Woods, the owner of USCanine. Angie explains in a no-nonsense manner the right way to gain leadership.

There's even a foundation set up in his name. Daddy's Emergency Animal Rescue fund (DEAR) to provide assistance for dogs who are victims of abuse or violence. God bless you Daddy (and you too Cesar.)
Now I’m going to end this page with a poem my son found and sent to me several years ago. I don’t know the author but it described our dogs so well, I cried. And then I memorized it. This could probably describe many dogs, particularly the bully breeds - but I haven't had them all... yet...
If you wonder what became of the Michael Vick Dogs or how Pit Bull dog fighting started, check out Michael Vick Dogs for an eleven minute movie on them and the history of Pit Bulls.
