Dog Breeding
Should I Breed My Dog ? Dog breeding should not be done without some serious thought on the subject. If you are asking yourself, "Should I breed my dog?" here are some good questions for you, along with some facts and food for thought. There are three major reasons why people choose to breed dogs.
Top Notch BreedersThere are some fabulous dog breeders out there who love dogs and want to strengthen the breed. They constantly monitor inherent weaknesses so they are not passed on. This isn't just done by observation and I'm sure its not cheap.
They breed for physical characteristics of the breed, disposition, and intelligence. I think these breeders are few and far between.
I Love My Dog and Want One Just Like Him
I think we have all felt that way. If you haven't yet, you probably will. The problem is this. Your chances are slim. Why? Because we're talking about breeding and not cloning. Do you have sisters and brothers? Are you exactly alike in looks; the way you act or the way you think? Are you exactly like one of your parents? Of course not so don't expect it when breeding a dog! And believe it or not, your dog may have genetic disorders that don't show up in him or her but WILL be a major problem in their offspring. Here's an example. One of my dogs has a kind of lazy eye which gets red on occasion. Most people don't notice it. My dog's sister was bred and at least one of the puppies is blind in one eye and the vet wants to remove it. He says it is useless and actually shriveling up.
I Need Extra Income
This is by far the dumbest reason for dog breeding. Dogs don't bring as much money from "backyard breeders" as established breeders, even if you have papered dogs. Plus there is a lot of expense in the process. Things can and do go wrong. You can easily end up spending more money that you earn by selling the puppies. Plus, what if they don't all get sold? Are you willing to keep them all for the rest of their lives or burden the pound or SPCA with yet more dogs to add to the already millions euthanized each year in the United States? And don't kid yourself. Puppies get put to death too. For a little more on the subject, please read another page entitled Should I Breed My Dog ? You should be aware of some ridiculous reasons a lot of folks get rid of their dogs. I really want you to have the facts before you make a decision that could affect thousands of dogs lives in a fairly short time. Why thousands? Do you think I'm exaggerating? Let's say your dog has 6 puppies and only two of them have their own 6 pups in one year. Of those 12, again 4 breed. Now we have 24 young dogs in just over a year. Of course if all six pups had six pups and they had offspring, we'd have 252 dogs in just over a year. I am thoroughly amazed at how many people think dog breeding is a good way to make money... and also how many of those people have begged me to help find homes for their dog's offspring.
