Dogs With Rabies

Dogs with rabies are rare.

Here are signs, symptoms and the incubation period of this lethal disease along with misread symptoms of vaccine side effects.

When the saliva borne rabies virus infects an animal through a bite, it travels to the brain where it produces severe mood shifts which can range from violent rage to catatonia (a state of unresponsiveness to external stimuli) followed by dementia and death.

The 'foaming at the mouth' that we've heard about is from muscle spasms in the throat and respiratory tract. The dog has difficulty swallowing and breathing as the virus attacks the central nervous system.

The incubation period for rabies is from one week to one year. In wild animals such as skunks and raccoons, rabies is a latent virus that lives among the population rarely erupting into the disease.

The fear, of course, is that humans can catch it. This is unfortunate for our dogs and has lead to the over-vaccination pushed by the drug manufacturers.

Rabies Vaccination Side Effects

The rabies vaccine should not be given more than once every five years, although once in a lifetime should be sufficient. Unfortunately in the U.S. the law is once every three years.

It used to be more often, which many vets still encourage. One of my dogs had two rabies shots in the same year because the previous owner did not supply the proof of vaccination.

Rabies Vaccine Side Effect

Here is what happened shortly after the second rabies shot. After 5 years, some days the leg is too sore to use and he has trouble with maneuverability. Other days he gets around on all fours just fine, although he's a bit gimpy looking. He has lost a lot of muscle in both legs.

Rabies Vaccine Side Effect

Aside from Fibrosarcoma (cancer) at the injection site, there are many short and long term rabies vaccine side effects. You can find them at Rabies Shots for Dogs.

In the meantime, for my dog, he gets only raw meat and cooked human grade food. I saved him from euthanasia, now I hope I can save him from cancer as well.
