Home Remedies for Fleas
and Natural Flea Repellents

These home remedies for fleas are recipes for natural flea control and repellents. Why not boost your dog's immune system while warding off fleas at the same time!

The first four listed can be used internally and externally. Several have links where you can go to learn more about them.

If you would enjoy making your own natural flea control sprays, herbal dog shampoos and conditioners, here is an excellent book I bought for myself.

Benefits of Brewers Yeast

Brewer's yeast for dogs is a source of B-complex vitamins (except B-12), chromium, and selenium. These vitamins help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which provide the body with energy.

They also support the nervous system, help maintain the muscles used for digestion, and keep skin, hair, eyes, mouth, and liver healthy.

  •  1 Tablespoon per day sprinkled on dog food. Half the amount for small dogs.
  •  Sprinkle this nutritional yeast on your dog every day or two and massage it in. She'll love the attention. Be sure to do this outdoors because any hitch hiking fleas will jump off!

Note: Debittered yeast is a no-no because it doesn't taste as bad to a flea.

Also if your dog suffers from dog yeast ear infectionsdo not add more yeast to his diet.

Garlic Benefits

Garlic for Dogs fed on a regular basis makes your pooch taste badly to a flea and improves his immune system since garlic is anti-fungal, antibacterial and makes him smell Italian!

Vinegar for Fleas

I've read on several websites that vinegar kills fleas on dogs. It didn't work for me, but I know putting a litle in their water bowl every day will repel them and its good for your dog. See benefits of vinegar for a flea spray recipe. Be sure to use only organic apple cider vinegar for this.

Bathing Fido

Using Dawn dish washing liquid (blue) for bath time kills the fleas ON your dog at the time. Don't bathe your dog too often or their skin will get dry and itchy. I bathe once a week if there are fleas. Otherwise only once a month or less.

This soap is not good for dogs but it is less toxic than many options and if you do an apple cider vinegar/water soak afterward, it conditions the coat and deters the fleas.

Two Home Made Citrus Flea Repellents

Safe around children too!

  • Lemon Tonic: Slice up 1 lemon. Place in a bowl and pour about 1 1/2 cups distilled water on it. Refrigerate 1 - 2 days and use liquid for a sponge bath.
  • Citrus Flea Spray: Slice one or a combination of orange, grapefruit and lemon. Slow boil 1 pint water per fruit in a pan for an hour or two. Strain and pour water into spray bottle. Another flea repellant you might like uses an electromagnetic field. It's called Shoo Tag Natural Flea Repellent.

Environmental Home Remedies for Fleas

Home Made Flea Traps: Fleas are attracted to heat, vibration and carbon dioxide. Try making your own flea traps in just a few minutes with a light, dish soap and water..

Borateen in Your Carpets: Brushing this natural borax into the carpet dehydrates and kills fleas dead. see Fleas in the House
