Homeopathy For Dogs - Dog Natural Health Care? -
Can we use homeopathy for dogs? Can it cure canine health problems? Is it a natural medicine? What is it and how does it work? The simple answer is...Yes. Remember these three words. Like Cures Like. Obviously it's much more detailed but remembering those three words help it make sense. Provided by a homeopathic vet, homeopathy for dogs works. Even provided by the dog owner, it works for simple ailments. The History of Homeopathy
Homeopathic ideas were used by Hippocrates (460 BC) but it was Dr. Samuel Hahnemann who is considered the father of homeopathy. Hahnemann graduated from medical school in 1779 and started his own medical practice. Eleven years later he began his first homeopathic experiments. He was disillusioned with common medical practices of the day including the use of toxic chemicals. (Sound familiar?) He believed in the theory of like cures like. Dr. Hahnemann searched for substances which would produce the same symptoms of an illness and recorded his findings. By diluting those substances and given as a remedy, they trigger the body to heal itself. Dr. Hahnemann lived 88 years. Not bad considering he lived from 1755-1843. In the early 1900’s there were 22 homeopathic medical schools, 100 homeopathic hospitals and over 1,000 homeopathic pharmacies in the United States alone. Homeopathy lost its appeal in the U.S. in the 1920's when modern drug companies began releasing drugs that were easy to administer to patients. The use of homeopathy is rising once again in the United States. Although most of the remedies prescribed for me have come from Germany, there are a growing number of companies in the United States. I have had a standard Hyland's Household Kit with 29 remedies that has lasted over ten years. How a Homeopathic Remedy is Made
A homeopathic remedy is prepared by diluting the substance in a series of steps. Many homeopathic remedies are so highly diluted that no molecules of the original substance are likely to remain. Homeopathy asserts that the remedy will retain a memory of the diluted substance and the therapeutic potency of a remedy can be increased by serial dilution combined with succussion, or vigorous shaking. The homeopathic remedies my physician gives me are liquid and when I use homeopathy for dogs, I use my standard household kit containing 29 remedies in pill form. An Unbelievable Story Using Homeopathic Arnica
Here is a real case scenario using homeopathy for dogs I find rather bazaar even though I witnessed it. Let me preface my story with the fact I believe positive and negative emotions also play a role in dog health and the recovery of all canine illnesses. Helen was in a dog fight with Lily. After my husband pulled them apart and kenneled them, I gave each one a look over to see what damage had been done. Each had a few puncture wounds, but Helen had a tooth hole less than an inch from her eye. Dramatically affected, Helen's face was swelling and her eye looked like it might disappear behind her growing skin. I had no money and no car so I was on my own playing the role of homeopathic vet. I went through my medicine box and chose two remedies. Ledum Palustre 30X for puncture wounds and Arnica 30X for pain and trauma. I carefully crushed the pills in a folded piece of paper and pulled her lower lip to pour the powder in for absorption. Then I let her go into her favorite alone place, my closet. I gave her another dose an hour later. Two hours after that I went to check on her and she was worse! Her entire head was swollen. Her eyes had all but disappeared completely. She looked like a prizefighter who'd lost the last fight of his life and was down for the final count. She refused any more remedy. Her breathing shallow, she refused to move. My heart sank. It took some doing, but I coaxed her into the living room to let her go in the coveted spot that is normally off limits to all dogs. A chair where she could bask in the warm sun. She tried but couldn't get on the chair. I hoisted her up but within a few minutes she slid off head first and made no attempt to get up.
I felt I needed to get another dose of arnica in her but didn't know how. I knew my being upset would only make it worse for her so I left the room for a few minutes to calm myself. Then I had a thought. Knowing that muscle testing can be done through a surrogate, I wondered if I could be the surrogate for her arnica. My thinking was that our energy flows like electricity. Just as if one person sticks a finger in a light socket and another touches that first person and the current flows through them both. I took the dose of arnica myself, sat on the floor and pulled Helen across my lap. It may be a useless way to administer homeopathy for dogs, but it was all I had. I read a lighthearted book and rubbed my dog's back while she remained motionless. I thought a little about what a pain in the butt this dog had been the seven years I'd had her. The aggression she came with I never quite conquered, her hardheadedness. But mostly I thought about her adorable fun loving side and total loyalty to me. Two hours passed before I heard the familiar sound of the truck coming up the driveway. Helen didn't move. I decided homeopathy for dogs may not work every time. I had trusted my gut and done my best but now I had to tell my husband I couldn't help our dog and I was sure she was dying. The door opened while Helen stayed motionless. My husband's big 6'7" body lumbered in subtly shaking the house with his presence. Helen jumped up and ran to greet her daddy, while my jaw dropped and I started sobbing. "What are you crying for?" asked my husband, "Helen looks great. I can't believe this is the same dog I saw this morning. Her swelling is almost gone." I'm still not sure exactly what happened, but I had forgotten an important piece of the puzzle at the time. Sometimes the symptoms get worse before they get better. Since then I've read many accounts of dogs on the brink of death, who recovered to full health. It's called a healing crisis. One thing I know for sure, I do believe in homeopathy for dogs.
