Neuticles for Neutered Dogs
Neuticles are a great idea. Replacing the testes with these implants makes a neutered male dog look more natural. Is this procedure more for the dogs or the owner? Are there any potential risks involved?
Neutering a Dog First of all there are two methods of neutering. One procedure is to make a small incision in the sack and remove the testicles. There is also total castration where the testicles and the sack are removed. Total castration bothers me, while leaving the sack does not. My Bonz had a total castration before I got him and I feel he's missing something. I can't say whether it bothers him or not. He was neutered as an adult and is still capable of . . . performing, which totally delights my unspayed female twice a year. (I'll explain about that in another article.) Are Neuticles for the Dog or the Owner? I can't say whether a canine feels less masculine without testicles, but I doubt it. I'm sure they notice something is missing since heaven knows they spend enough time grooming that area. Perhaps it bothers me less because I am female. When a man owns a male dog, there is a different mindset. Since I doubt my husband or his friends will ever read this, I'll admit, I think these men are big babies. They worry themselves to death if their beloved dogs get sick and the mere thought of their babies not having testicles makes them wince, at the very least. I'm glad they have feelings, but their worry could be a bit misplaced.
If testicle implants are the perfect solution for people, what about the dog? How does he benefit? If the owner is more proud of his dog when he walks him because he looks normal; if he feels he's giving something back to his companion after neutering, then I think it's a psychological benefit to the dog. Let's face it, humans are emotional creatures. Dogs and their owners are connected. If we feel bad, so does our canine. Potential Risks or Side Effects It is possible for scar tissue to form around the implant. This may cause discomfort and pain. It's the same risk women face when getting breast implants but there's still an awful lot of them anyway. What are Neuticles Made of? The original neuticle is made from polypropylene. It's not plastic but resembles plastic in firmness. There's also solid silicone which is softer. The ultra model is softer yet and contains a chemical that is suppose to stop the risk of scar tissue development. Price of These Testicle Implants I actually talked to my vet about doing something very sneaky. My husband was traveling a lot at the time and we discussed having Moo neutered and giving him implants while my husband was out of town. I thought it would benefit Moo, our entire household, the neighborhood and all female dogs nationwide. However, it was dishonest in regard to my spouse. Now that I finally looked up the price, I realize I am too cheap. Here it is: Price: $1,100.00 to $1,300.00 a pair! * * *
