Should I Breed My Dog ?

You have the perfect dog, so you ask, Should I breed my dog? Maybe you want a puppy. Or, you want to make money selling the fabulous puppies you know you will have. Let me help you.

Like many, perhaps you believe all the dogs at the pound, animal control or the SPCA aren't anything like your dog. After all, they were given up because they were problem dogs right?

Because there are over 5 million problem dogs euthanized each year, it has nothing to do with good dogs because no one would put down a sweet dog like yours right?

Before you answer yes to, "Should I breed my dog?" let me give you some reasons why other folks give up their dogs by either dropping them off far from home where they can 'find' a new owner, or take them to one of the above agencies.

  • I have no time for a dog
  • He's not cute anymore
  • I want a puppy
  • I'm tired of cleaning up all that dog hair
  • He chews everything in sight
  • He barks
  • He always wants attention
  • I want a dog who listens better
  • I want a different breed of dog
  • He's just too big
  • The children don't take care of him anymore
  • He doesn't get along with my cat
  • He costs to much

I have no idea how many of these people feel remorse over the probable fate of their dog, but I can tell you this. There are folks out there who change dogs like they change their shoes.

They do not feel responsible for their dogs, have no idea how to train or the desire to learn. If the dog isn't perfect, without any input from the owner, they are out the door.

Of course this type of dog owner will never visit this website. My visitors not only feel responsible for their canine companions, they see them as members of the family and deeply care about their health and well being.

People who visit here do not see dogs as a personal adornment or status symbol. They understand and appreciate their dogs loyalty and emotional contribution to the family.

Our dogs are often our teachers who remind us to live in the moment. Dogs are gifted at being happy for no reason and those of us in tune, get caught up in that happiness. What a gift.

Now, when you ask yourself, "Should I breed my dog?" I want you to visualize hundreds of thousands of dogs in chain link kennels with cold hard concrete floors. Their only companionship the crying, howling and barking of the other inmates of their prison. Instead of the smell of fresh air and sweet grass, urine and fecal matter are the perfume of life.

But People Who Pay for Dogs, Keep Them

Nice thought. Some people pay thousands of dollars for a watch too. Doesn't mean they'll love it and keep it forever. I've seen gorgeous pure breed dogs at the pound.

* * *

Why am I so adamant about filling your head with these cold hard facts? Because once, just once, I let someone talk me into breeding my dog.

Nine years later, I still feel the burden of what I did. For my story, why I suffered from temporary insanity and all the ups and downs of insanely owning five pit bulls, start at, Pit Bull Dogs, or go straight to the part of the story that explains why I decided to breed my $1800.00 dog at A Pit Bull Puppy For Helen.

If you are not a Pit Bull lover, the story could be about any breed. Now, to answer the question, "Should I
breed my dog?" the answer is... please don't do it.
