IBD in dogs may begin with giardia so healing the gut naturally with herbs at home is part of my giardia program.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease can be devastating and it can kill your dog. Sadly it happened to a dog I knew but it doesn't have to happen if you understand it and take steps to help the body recover.
In simple terms which I definitely prefer, the bowels as in lower intestines and colon become irritated. The body's first defense is inflammation. Inflammation/swelling is a symptom.
Without stopping the cause of the inflammation, further damage is done.
At the same time the body cannot digest food properly to build new healthy cells to replace those that die normally and a downward spiral begins.
We usually see the result - diarrhea. Especially diarrhea with mucus because that's what the body lines the bowels with to prevent damage. If we pay attention, we know it's a cry for help from the body.
The greatest gift you can give your dog is NO FOOD. Start with 12 to 24 hours.
I know it feels cruel. I hate doing it but I do it anyway. I did it with giardia and I do it a few times a month because I love my Lulu. Often dogs will instinctively refuse food when they are sick or need a pick-me-up because not eating allows the body to rest and repair.
Note: If you dog wants to skip a meal a few times a week, pay attention and don't use bribery!
Giardia wreaks havoc on the gut since those little protozoa attach themselves to it and feed. They can reproduce at alarming speed since they simply split rather than having to lay eggs or reproduce in any other fashion.
In my opinion, if you don't work on the gut while working on the giardia, you haven't done enough and it will show up again and again.
My herbal program for giardia includes healing the damaged bowels.
If nothing is done such as fasting and a way to rebuild the intestinal walls is provided, those walls weaken and form leaks so that foods, bacteria and other toxins actually get into the body cavity where there is no means to purge it. This literally poisons the body and since foods cannot be digested, the poor dog weakens and dies.
