The best dog supplements should be nourishing, aid digestion, balance the microbiome (think gut and immune system here) and help expel toxins.
A far cry from adding vitamins.
We know so much more about the body now than we did even a decade ago, it's time we get past vitamin supplements and help the whole body as much as possible.
The body thrives when balanced so that all parts of the body can work together in synchronicity. It reminds me of an old song many of us learned as kids. . .
The leg bone's connected to the knee bone,
The knee bone's connected to the thigh bone,
The thigh bone's connected to the hip bone . . .
Well guess what? We know the bones are connected even though we can't see the connection. Just like that, every part on the inside is connected as well and relies on the other parts to do it's job. When one is 'off' the others become off as well.
Here's what I mean. Let's say you only give a supplement that is suppose to nourish the body like say, a vitamin and mineral supplement. Here's the rub. If the rest of the body isn't up to par, they'll simply go in one end and out the other. Or worse, hang around in the body. Things that hang around basically become toxins since the body cannot use them or expel them.
So much for good intentions huh?
Help every body system and get all the way down to the cellular level. That's the real nitty gritty (heart of the matter).
Those supplements my Lulu sat patiently with while her strange mom took a picture instead of giving them to her are what I'm going to explain. (Okay, I thought it was as cool idea, she didn't.)
I'll give you an abbreviated explanation here and then a link to the longer version that includes video so you can choose how much detail you want before you buy them.
The first superfood every mammal gets, even a dog or human with an autoimmune disorder can benefit. How cool is that? Learn more at Colostrum Benefits.
Enzymes do far more than help digest food. Think of them as spark plugs for the body because they are catalysts for thousands of bodily processes. Without them we would die. Learn more at The Magic of Enzymes.
Ah probiotics. Did you know they are live bacteria? Not only do they help with digestion but since we have around 23,000 genes and 4 million distinct bacterial genes, keeping them balanced so there's more good guys than bad is paramount. Unfortunately our lifestyle and that which we provide for our dogs mess them up big time. Learn more at The Power of Probiotics.
The liver is the cleansing organ and with 500 daily processes it needs help. By supporting the liver and helping it detoxify everything from food additives to daily exposure to destructive chemicals, it can keep up with it's end of the bargain. Read more at the Dog Liver Supplement page.
An algae? Really? YES! I added this one last year after I took the picture of Lulu and here's the big takeaway I learned from my own naturopath. This awesome combination is not only packed with nutrition, it is the only natural way I know of to detox the body from heavy metals without side effects. (Think vaccines, environmental gunk etc.)

I use and promote Natures Sunshine Products. They are made for humans but I trust them far more than any "dog supplements" out there.
