The Best Dry Dog Food

You think the best dry dog food title sounds opinionated? How about The best commercial holistic dry dog food? Although I am a proponent of feeding a raw meat diet, everyone should know about this new food.

Dr. Wysong appears to have outdone himself, creating one of the best dog kibbles on the market. While I don't know the man personally, I've read at least 100 articles he has written about dog health, pet health and human health. The man makes sense.

Why would a doctor who has studied nutrition and believes in feeding BARF to dogs and cats, make the best commercial dog food? Because people are lazy. We all want convenience and are just to used to opening a bag of dog food and pouring it in the bowl.

Heck, half the people I know won't even cook for themselves. Everyone is in a hurry and tries not to think about nutrition at all. So how can we, as natural dog health promoters, expect them to do it for their dogs?

So if you won't consider feeding a healthy raw diet, here's what you should know.

Grain Free Dog Food

In a nutshell, grain free dog food has become very popular. Grains aren't necessarily bad for dogs but the amount of grains should be low and they should be whole grains. Most grains used in commercial dog food are low quality and overly abundant.

So what's happened to most of those grain free pet foods on the market? They've just changed from low quality grains to low quality starchy vegetables. I wouldn't feed my dogs a bag of potatoes for dinner either. Instead I give them pieces of fresh baked sweet potatoes as treats. Again, not a large portion.

What makes Wysong the best dry dog food is not just quality of ingredients. They have now taken BOTH grains and starches out of the mix, and they are patenting...

Wysong Epigen™ Dog Food

Here is what is different about Epigen™. I got this right from their website:

  • Contains an unprecedented 60+% meat and organs (90% for Epigen 90™) and over 60% protein
  • Is replete with all the critical food elements Wysong was first to put into pet foods – probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, phytonutrients, nutraceuticals, natural form antioxidants, vitamins and minerals
  • Rich in omega-3's and other essential fatty acids
  • Made in the USA at Wysong manufacturing facilities with ingredients from USDA and FDA approved domestic sources

Wysong Epigen™ represents the first important kibble pet food innovation in almost 60 years (patent pending) and moves conventional dry extruded pet foods much closer to the high protein meat-based, starchless foods carnivores are genetically designed for. With that, they are given greater opportunity to enjoy their full natural health. Epigen™ is equally appropriate for both cats and dogs.

Wysong has my vote because they have been a leader in improving pet foods, they have been in business for 30 years and other dog food manufacturers have copied, or claim to use, many of those innovations.

And yes, there are other good dog foods out there, but you have to watch them closely. Why? It seems as soon as they get a good following of customers, they get bought out by one of the huge dog food manufactures and then the ingredients decrease in quality, putting them near the bottom of the heap while the cost stays high.

Raw organic meats are still the best way to feed dogs and cats (and Wysong has that for sale too) but if you are a die-hard kibble feeder or want a dry dog food some of the time for convenience (or when you're on vacation), I must recommend Wysong Epigen™ as the best dry dog food out there at this point.

A quick note about canine kidney health. A very helpful hint when feeding a high protein dry dog food is to add water.
