BARF or raw dog food isn’t new! What do you think our canines ate before the ‘invention’ of dog food? Let’s talk about this.
Of course this conversation is easy for me because I can’t hear you.
BUT ...I will imagine you nodding your head in agreement at some points and shrugging your shoulders here and there and maybe lifting an eyebrow at a few points, so let’s get to it.
Let’s say you lived on a farm back in the day. (Note that my back in the day might be before yours.) Your dogs would have had a job or two. One would be to keep the barn free of rodents. That saved your grain, kept illness at bay and fed your dog. Cool.
You would also toss leftover meats and fats to your canine. Wow! He was eating raw dog food.
If you lived in the city there would still be rodents to control and he probably did that job. If not, what did he eat? Leftovers from your plates; parts of meats or fats you didn't cook. Wow, he ate both raw and cooked foods. Amazing.
More people lived in cities than rurally and of course they were busy. Dog food was advertised for it's convenience. It was cool and by the late 1940's 85% of all dog foods sold were kibble and no one had to think about anything but throwing some dog food in a bowl.
Of course they still had leftovers to share so the Pet Food Institute started a campaign that feeding table scraps was not good for your dog. Never mind that 98% of the commercial pet food companies in the United States were and still are members of the Pet Food Institute.
I was on the bandwagon with everyone else on the dog food in a bag thing and you 'd probably see me waiving as I went by. Secretly though I ignored the whole table scrap thing because that was ludicrous. All my pets got meat and veggies.
Surprisingly, they liked them more than their scientifically formulated dog food or cat food. Hmm.
Then something happened. I realized even though I'd been reading the ingredients label for years, I didn't know what any of that stuff meant so I did some research. Uh-oh. Not good.
Then I heard rumors about people feeding something other than dog food even though their vets were against it. After all it wasn't scientifically formulated ...it was done by ...nature. OMG!
Now there is a growing number of humans who know dogs are carnivores and have gone back to basics of BARF dog food or a dog raw diet of real foods. The commercial dog food companies are not happy with us.
While I was quiet about it for awhile, I sought dog nutrition advice from veterinarians who believe in real food.
I've come out of the closet to admit the whole table scrap thing and that I only feed ...dare I say it? Raw dog food! Yup, I feed BARF dog food and I hate that name. While it is biologically appropriate raw food, it has not been previously thrown up or regurgitated and my dogs haven't missed a meal since I started.. raw meat, raw meaty bones, chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, duck, goose, tripe, liver, kidney ... whatever I can get for free or on sale.
I've learned to balance even though many vets still say I'm not capable. The problem is, I'm not going to make a special trip in to tell the vet because we never have to go there anymore.
Now I share what I know including raw dog food recipes for others on the same journey.
